Preliminary Task

The Preliminary task involved myself, Jessica and Paige being presented with a script which we then had to interpret in our own way. The script involved 4 characters so Jessica took on the role of the two characters, Dani and Sam, Paige took on the role of Toni and I was Sonia. The story involves Toni and Sam having a conversation about there friend Sonia who hadn’t returned home after the previous nights events. During this conversation, Toni decides to call Sonia and soon finds out that Sonia is at the hospital and appears to be in a lot of trouble.

As a group we decided to go through the script and discussed possible storylines and then what sort of camera angles would fit best with each line. The opening scene shows a set of feet walking down the stairs, which then fades to the same feet walking along a corridor. During the editing process we made these two shots fade together which was quite effective. We then used a match on action shot which shows the character Toni pushing opening the door, and then jumps to her walking out of the door. We then go to a two shot as Toni sits down on the bench next to Sam.

Using over the shoulder shots, and shot reverse shot we here a conversation between the two characters. A close up shot of a phone is then seen as Toni dials a number. We decided to be adventurous with our camera angles and used an aerial shot of Sonia sitting on a settee and then Dani walking towards and taking a seat next to her. It jumps to a shot of Sonia answering the phone and then quickly jumps back to the a close up shot of Toni after hearing the conversation and all of this shows continuity editing. Finally, the camera tracks Sam walking towards Toni and the last shot shows Sam dropping her things as she hears the news.

If we we’re to do this task again, we would focus more on making the audience being able to hear the sound as when we filmed outside, the wind played a huge part in not being able to hear the speech. I feel that we should have shot our scenes inside as they wouldn’t have looked so shaky – as we would be able to use a tripod - and the sound would be a lot clearer.
